The mission of the Adult Basic Skills Department is to provide educational opportunities for adults 18 years of age and older who were unable to complete their formal schooling. The program addresses the needs of adults who do not have a high school diploma or who lack sufficient mastery of basic educational skills to enable them to function effectively in today’s world. The program provides educational opportunities for adults to improve their reading, writing, mathematics, and communication skills through five major programs, targeted to specific populations: Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Educational Development (GED), Adult High School (AHS), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Compensatory Education (CE).  Classes are free and open to adults living or working in Union County or Anson County and the surrounding area.

Individuals entering Adult Basic Skills classes work closely with the instructor in classroom settings and may choose a day or night class, either on or off campus. New students may enroll throughout the semester by calling 704-290-5100 in Monroe, or 704-272-5300 in Wadesboro. All Adult Basic Skills classes are free.
